Jersey Girl Returns to Roots

It is with a heavy heart that I report we are leaving Brooklyn after 13 years of living in Park Slope. As Nate grows bigger and increasingly active, we’ve decided to acknowledge the nagging desire dormant in every New Yorker’s mind: the call of a house. Yes, there are the obvious trappings: closets, a yard, and more than one bathroom, but there are also the more subtle things too: being closer to my parents, access to nature (Ok, keep your NJ remarks to yourself now), loading a car with Trader Joe’s groceries and not having to trek up four flights to cram them in two kitchen cabinets…

So, yes, we’re heading to the burbs. Just draw a straight line from the Holland Tunnel and that’s where we are going: Maplewood, NJ. We hear it’s nice. We hope so. I’m excited to have my own office again. I love my husband, but I do not enjoy his desk or filing cabinets impinging on my space.

How will this affect you my humble clients and friends? As far as I can see you'll have to update your contact info (shown below), but ultimately it won’t affect you too much as I’ll still be taking the train into the city for meetings (no different from doing so in Brooklyn). Pictures of our new abode do not do it justice. We call it the brick box. It has a pool!

The phone number is active already so feel free to test it out (have you used Google voice, this thing is awesome!)?

Project Spotlight(s)

I’ve had the privilege to design a variety of rewarding projects over the past few months. Thus it was too difficult to select one project to highlight, so I picked two of my favorites. Enjoy!

TakeTwo Branding

As most of you know, I collaborate with a lot of nonprofit organizations. Recently I designed the logo, website and a brochure for TakeTwo Services, a new one-stop shop that focuses on communications and development services for nonprofit organizations. Traditionally divided into two separate functions, TakeTwo brings together these two services under one roof. As we sat down and discussed how to visually tell the TakeTwo story, we kept returning to the idea of duality. These relationships became the foundation and visual metaphor for the whole brand. I created a logo that intertwined two elements (thinking again of the communications and fundraising as being two elements that come together through this company’s work) and then I created some illustrations to go with their wonderfully creative and playful copy. Check out the site and watch the whole slideshow.

We print designers are often fretting about the death of printed matter, but with Classroom, Inc.’s 2011 Annual Report, my client and I discovered that you can have your cake and eat it too. Printed designs will always be necessary for ease of use, access, and overall readability, but in this current digital environment, it’s important for designers to be able to adapt publications to a larger readership, both online and off. For this annual report, we took it to a whole new level by creating both print and interactive versions. The printed version takes advantage of the layout and typographic flexibility inherent in the print environment, but the Flash version allowed us to keep a lot of those design elements, and take it one step further by using some of the new interactive features of InDesign. Acting as a hybrid of print and web, this new online annual report almost looks like a printed document (using spreads and a more non-traditional layout), but it also capitalizes on the great features that the web has to offer (video, movement, slideshows, sound, and time-based media). Check it out! Maybe your next report might benefit from being delivered in both printed and interactive formats. We learned a lot putting this together and I’d be happy to consult with you about how this could be applied to one of your projects.
