For no reason other than it's funny, here's a picture of my cat wearing a post-surgery cone. Good thing humans don't need these.

Cabbage Rolls in Golden Sauce!
The whole family will go crazy for minced cabbage, MSG, and ground beef.

It's 2010 and I'm Back in Business!

Whew! It’s been a busy six months – Nate is adorable and never ceases to fascinate me. I’ve really enjoyed watching him develop and I must say that I puffed up with a little design pride when my nanny informed me that Nate is “very visual.” I can’t wait to get some crayons into those little paws. For now I’ll have to settle with getting him to grasp Sophie the Giraffe. For those of you who do not attend regular mommy and me yoga sessions, Sophie is a rather boring rubber giraffe that is a mysterious Park Slope baby phenomenon. Naturally Nate had to have one.

Now where is the mural?, you might be thinking. Umm, well, part of it is sitting on my computer and part of it is rolled up ready to be applied to the wall. I promise that by the next newsletter the mural will be up and pictures will accompany the story. We just had the room painted so we’re finally ready to move forward. Nate doesn’t care. He spent the first month basically sleeping in a box.

So what’s up with KVDesign? I’m back in business! I work three full days (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) and a little bit on Tuesdays depending on the project. I’m actively seeking new work, so please feel free to contact me with your design needs (or even just to say hi). The door is open and frankly, baby’s gotta eat…and have toys…and wear clothes…and so on. It’s up to you to make sure that he lives and prospers. No pressure.

Kerstin Vogdes Is Now Kerstin Vogdes Diehn and Clearly a Glutton for Punishment

After a grueling 3-month struggle with the Brooklyn court system, I’ve finally changed my name from Kerstin Vogdes to Kerstin Vogdes Diehn. (Did you know that in addition to getting a court order, one must publish his/her name change in a newspaper? Yeah, neither did I.) While having the same last name will simplify my son’s life, this will no doubt complicate everyone else’s. As if two difficult names were not enough, I decided a third name that no one can spell or pronounce would really liven things up. (For those of you who don’t know, it’s pronounced “Dean”.) This doesn’t affect my business name, but it does affect personal checks, etc. Feel free to update your Contact list. I’m pretty sure no one has a Rolodex but if you do, that’s incredibly cool.

Featured Project: United Methodist Women Sudan Educational Materials

The United Methodist Women contacted me about designing an educational package of materials to be dispatched to missionaries working in Sudan. The project included a book about Sudan and the quest for peace in a place of conflict (The Beauty and Courage of Sudan), a study guide with activities for children (Piece Work/Peace Work), a DVD package (When Freedom?), and an original map of the country detailing major cities, rivers, and roads.

sudan

The map augments the classroom experience and on the reverse side, contains key statistical and graphical information about Sudan’s history. As very few comprehensive maps exist of Sudan and its infrastructure, this map was a challenge to design as I had to synthesize information from a collection of different maps and sources.
