I've Returned from the Jungle and Have the Photos to Prove It!

As many of you know, I took a short hiatus to travel in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. I learned many important things, like how to milk a cow, how to avoid army ants, and how to set aside my vanity. No one looks attractive in lime green rain gear, convertible pants, and wicking tops--especially when one drops a blue pen in the laundry bag the first week...

As with all vacations, return is inevitable. I'm happily ensconced in the Brooklyn studio and delighted to be dry. More importantly, I'm excited to be back in business. Let me know if I can help you with any of your "back to work" needs this fall!

Annual Report Roundup

This summer I had the pleasure of designing two annual reports, one for Classroom, Inc. and one for the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. Click on the above links to check out the designs and find out more about these two important organizations. If you need to spruce up your annual report or any other printed materials, don't hesitate to give me a call or send me an email!

The Election: Design Matters

Graphic design got a brief moment in the sun in the 2004 election. We all remember the dreaded butterfly ballot and how this design atrocity resulted in pretty dire consequences. The 2008 election brings graphic design into the spotlight again and here are a couple of my favorite articles:

1. Check out this interactive ballot design in the New York Times to get a taste of how good graphic design can influence democracy.

2. Barack Obama has truly built a brand around himself by embracing a bright palette and using the contemporary Gotham font to give an open, warm look to his campaign materials. Michael Beirut, prolific designer and blogger, explores the Obama brand in this Newsweek article...If this gets you thinking about your own brand, contact me about designing an updated look for your company or organization!

Kerstin joins Facebook, reluctantly, only to become obsessed.

After much pressure from family and friends, I finally launched a Facebook profile. For many months I have been loudly crowing about how I could get by just fine without it. I justified my position thusly: Since I am a college professor I am reluctant to have my students become my "friends." Not that I don't love my students, I'm just not sure I want them knowing about my avid obsession for The Wire and Helvetica. Mea culpa! I'm now a Facebook convert. Up-to-the-minute updates about everyone! What are you doing RIGHT NOW? I can't wait to find out.
